Norfolk Island is a dot on the map closer to New Zealand than Australia but like Christmas Island and the Cocos Islands, it is one of Australia’s so-called external territories.
For a long time the people who live there have considered themselves an independent nation – and in fact they’ve tried to establish that by appeal to the law – but the final steps to make them ordinary Australian citizens will take place on 1 July.
